“I think a book can do so much for your authority and your expertise.”

Scott Voelker, author of The Take Action Effect

Scott Voelker built multiple six and seven figure businesses and a podcast, The Amazing Seller, that took off. Seven years ago he wrote The Take Action Effect with Scribe. He launched it live to about 250 people who flew in from all over the world, and became known as the take action guy.

From seven dollars an hour to seven figures

Scott’s story starts in his father’s construction company. The book follows how he got from there to a seven figure business, and what every step in between taught him.

“Every single action that I took kind of built me for the next thing.”

— Scott Voelker

That is the book’s core idea. Most people stall because they are afraid the time and energy they put in will be wasted if they miss the goal. Scott’s answer is to change the scorecard.

“Like so to me, it’s like stop thinking about like, did you hit your goal? Did you learn something in the process? And can you take that with you to use for the rest of your life?”

— Scott Voelker

A personal book, not just a strategic one

Clip · Scott Voelker on writing the book he needed · 23s

Scott is candid that The Take Action Effect was not written as a business play. Part of the reason was his family.

“Part of the reason I wrote the book was because I wanted something to kind of give to my kids, almost like a journal of like my life, of like what I did.”

— Scott Voelker

By then he had also become known for one phrase. Every podcast episode ended up being about taking action, and he still has the sign behind his desk to prove it.

“So I don’t think it was the best strategic book, but it was a book that I felt I needed and I wanted to put out into the world.”

— Scott Voelker

Did it still do the authority work a business book is supposed to do? Scott’s answer was short.

“Now, does it create or does it put me up a little bit more in authority because I’ve written a book? Yes.”

— Scott Voelker

Why he hired Scribe

Clip · Scott Voelker on why he hired Scribe · 32s

Scott does not like writing, and he had no interest in locking himself away to write a book alone. What he did want was a book that sounded like him.

“That’s why I hired Scribe. I didn’t want to do that, but I did want it to be my writing and my style and my stories.”

— Scott Voelker

The process felt familiar to someone who had spent years behind a podcast microphone.

“I met with my Scribe a lot and we would just go, I mean, hours upon hours. And what was cool about it was I was just telling stories.”

— Scott Voelker

A launch with 250 people and his writer on stage

Scott launched the book at a live event in Texas, just before COVID hit.

“And I launched it to about 250 people that flew in from all over the world, in Texas.”

— Scott Voelker

The book took about a year to put together, and Scott is still friends with the writer he worked with. At the launch, he gave her the stage.

“I had her [my Scribe writer] come to the event and come up on stage and present the book because I honored her for what she had helped me create.”

— Scott Voelker

Turning the book into a video book

Clip · Scott Voelker on the video book · 41s

Today Scott runs Brand Creators with his son, helping coaches, consultants, and authors build authority on YouTube. When he works with an author, his first question after the audiobook is whether they have a video book: the condensed keynote or masterclass version of the book’s process.

“Well, that becomes what we call your anchor video. That’s technically your book. And now what we do is we deploy that on YouTube. But more importantly, now it lives outside of just the book.”

— Scott Voelker

The goal is what he calls becoming bingeable. A reader who finishes the book goes looking for more, and something should be there when they do.

“And if you don’t have that there, you’re doing a disservice and you’re also not leveraging the authority that you just created.”

— Scott Voelker

It matters more now that AI search answers questions by citing sources, and Scott points to a recent report naming YouTube as one of the top citation sites.

“Well, if you’re on a podcast about your book, you got another citation, right, and another proof piece and another piece of authority.”

— Scott Voelker

What he tells authors now

Clip · Scott Voelker on his advice for authors · 37s

Scott learned how much a voice and a face build trust when listeners started coming up to him with details about his dog’s surgery and his son’s basketball games. His advice to authors follows from that.

“So if you are a book author and you’re listening to this, get an audio book if you don’t have one and put yourself up on video or start a podcast or be on other people’s podcast, that would be my recommendation.”

— Scott Voelker

Next up is a second book, Steady Leads, a more strategic one that walks through his YouTube process in written form. Seven years after the first one, Scott still traces everything back to its title.

“And again, it’s like if I didn’t take action, we wouldn’t be here today. Right. Hence, take action effect.”

— Scott Voelker
