Maxwell P. Westerman, MD, spent more than six decades in medicine as a physician, educator, and researcher. He invented the Westerman-Jensen Bone Marrow Biopsy Needle in 1958, published more than 100 medical articles with a particular focus on sickle cell anemia, and taught at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Chicago Medical School, and Rush Medical College. As Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Chicago's Sinai Health System, he chronicled the institution's history in Medical Excellence for a Changing Community, drawing on more than 100 interviews.
