The One Thing AI Will Never Take From Financial Advisors

<span id="hs_cos_wrapper_name" class="hs_cos_wrapper hs_cos_wrapper_meta_field hs_cos_wrapper_type_text" style="" data-hs-cos-general-type="meta_field" data-hs-cos-type="text" >The One Thing AI Will Never Take From Financial Advisors</span>

The following is adapted from The Listening Advisor by John Gatewood.

I'll be honest about something many advisors don't want to hear: AI is coming for almost everything we thought made us valuable. It will democratize technical expertise, optimize portfolios, and predict what clients need before they ask. Our knowledge, our analytical skills, our ability to build a plan can all increasingly be replicated by machines. And here's the part that stings the most: AI will get better at the soft skills too.

The technology being built today won't just run calculations. It will read facial expressions and vocal patterns to detect emotion, learn behavioral tendencies, and predict when a client is about to make a poor decision. It will simulate empathy with startling accuracy, and it can even produce a digital version of you, your face, your voice, your communication style. This isn't science fiction. It's already in development.

The evidence is everywhere. A survey from the trading platform eToro found that roughly 30% of individual investors now use AI for portfolio guidance. When the Wall Street Journal handed ChatGPT a hypothetical $1 million portfolio, a certified planner gave its allocation a passing grade, but its advice under market stress was called "wacky," and its returns lagged the S&P 500. MIT's Andrew Lo even expects AI to formally serve as a fiduciary in the coming years. But here's the thing: licensing will protect the recommendation. It will never protect the relationship. That is still yours.

So if AI can master the technical work, simulate emotional intelligence, and even mimic your voice, why do human advisors still matter? Because the difference isn't what we know. It's what we are.

Think about the widow sitting across from you six months after losing her husband, terrified and making decisions that will shape the rest of her life. Think about the executive who wants to spend a $2 million bonus the moment it lands. Think about the young couple torn between traveling now and saving for later, or the client begging to sell everything after the market drops 30%. In each of these moments, people aren't just asking for data. They're asking another human being to help them navigate uncertainty.

That's the one thing AI cannot do. It can calculate what "enough" is, but only another mortal can help someone discover what enough means to them. It can flag an inconsistency, but only a human can look a client in the eye and hold them accountable to their own values. It takes human courage to risk a relationship by saying the hard thing, and clients feel the weight of that honesty because they know it costs you something.

Your value was never that you're smarter or more empathetic than a machine. Your value is that you're real, you're mortal, and you understand uncertainty from the inside. In moments of fear and transition, people will always need other people.
