The following is adapted from The End of Autoimmunity by Leland Stillman.

Amy was headed for medical school when she woke up one morning and could not feel her legs. She was rushed to the hospital, where an MRI revealed lesions scattered throughout her brain and spinal cord. The diagnosis was multiple sclerosis. Her doctors told her, with certainty, that she would soon be confined to a wheelchair, that she might never care for children, and that any medical career would be brief.

She was in her late twenties, and she was devastated.

I don't believe what happened to Amy was random. She grew up in Salinas, California, surrounded by agricultural pesticides. As a child she received years of allergy shots, many likely containing aluminum, on top of the aluminum in her childhood vaccines. In college she drank from aluminum cans and ate processed food. Later, mission work in El Salvador probably exposed her to parasites. The links between these exposures and multiple sclerosis are strong.

After crying for weeks, Amy refused to accept her prognosis. She studied environmental toxins, nutrition, and the role of infections in driving autoimmunity. People thought she was crazy. She didn't listen. She cleaned up her diet, eliminated processed foods, gluten, and dairy, and ate organic, nutrient-dense whole foods. She removed toxins from her life, followed detoxification protocols, and cleared the parasites she'd carried home. She gave her body a full year to repair itself. Her symptoms resolved. Her follow-up MRIs showed the active lesions were gone. She never needed a wheelchair, and seven years later she remains symptom-free.

I view every disease, including Amy's, as arising from three root causes. The first is metabolic imbalance, meaning both nutrient deficiencies and excesses that leave the immune system malnourished. The second is toxins and stress, which accumulate in our tissues until the immune system loses control. The third is infection, where parasites and other invaders produce proteins that mimic human tissue, confusing an already overwhelmed immune system into attacking its own cells.

Most people think autoimmunity is the body attacking itself for no reason. I see it differently. I believe autoimmunity is your body's best attempt to rescue damaged tissue and resolve chronic inflammation. The problem isn't a broken immune system. The problem is that damage is accumulating faster than your body can repair it. I call this a repair deficit.

Think of your health like a bank account. Every stress is a withdrawal, and every night of rest, every nourishing meal, every hour of sunlight is a deposit. Withdrawals are fast and deposits are slow. When the account runs dry for long enough, the safety mechanisms of the immune system fail.

You don't need lesions on an MRI to benefit from this. If you're exhausted, foggy, or struggling with symptoms no one can explain, the root causes are the same, and so is the path forward.
